The Perth Mint transformed the presentation packaging of two of our key licensed product releases in 2024 to achieve almost 100% paper-based material.
This project has not only addressed environmental concerns but has also demonstrated how sustainability and quality can go hand in hand.
Traditionally the presentation box bases for our collector coins are made from recycled plastic covered in paper with a lid made from either acrylic or MDF.
Our SpongeBob SquarePants – SpongeBob and Friends 2024 1oz Silver Proof Coloured Coin and Frida Kahlo 2024 2oz Silver Antiqued Coloured Coin were released in presentation boxes comprised entirely of a combination of FSC cardboard and FSC paper, with a coin insert made from paper pulp.
The only element of the packaging of these coins not made from paper is the protective pillow which is made from 30% recycled velvet fabric.
The benefit of this type of packaging is that the paper and cardboard elements are both biodegradable and recyclable, reducing the environmental impact from the traditional plastic components.
Producing these components from paper is cost effective because they are based on the size and format of our generic coin packaging and can be easily customised to suit the theme of different products. For example, the Frida Kahlo coin packaging was further enhanced using textured paper.
The paper packaging is especially suited to our licensed products, such as SpongeBob, which typically are more colourful and aim to convey a sense of fun to appeal to the more casual coin collector.
